Wanneroo Golf Club History
Wanneroo Golf Club owes its existence to a dedicated band of amateur players who were determined to improve their golfing experience.
This group first met in 1970, united by their desire to provide access to a local private course with fantastic facilities. Rather than expend time and effort trying to bring about change in those around them, the group decided that the quickest way to achieve their goals was to found and build their own “private” club.
Their vision was achieved in three short years. The official opening day of the golf course was 24th March, 1973.
The Foundation Committee instigated and fostered the volunteers and sponsors who literally built the course with their own hands. It was back-breaking work, but it has proved to be a worthwhile effort and one which is appreciated by everyone associated with the Club.
Over the years, the Wanneroo Golf Club has achieved success by making improvements within existing resources and frugal management. The golf course and clubhouse are owned freehold by the Club which is debt free – a credit to the Founding Members and Management over nearly 53 years.
The Club has a view that a sporting organisation that stagnates, slowly dies and withers away. With this over-riding belief, the Club has assessed its needs, on the course and in regard to the facilities, investing in projects assessed as being physically and financially manageable.
In recent years, new boreholes, pumps, re-laying the water storage feature on the 15th hole and installing a completely new irrigation system over the entire golf course has taken priority. The final borehole in this redevelopment was completed in early 2023.
The innovative alfresco addition to the Club, including the new Pro Shop, has been appreciated by members and visitors alike. There are now plans in place to upgrade the external ladies’, men’s and disabled toilet facilities that will be integrated into the existing main Club building and alfresco area. The car park has been resurfaced and with the roadworks on Flynn Drive nearing completion, a new security system and entrance gates for the Club are being finalised to improve control and security in this area.
To increase the number of bays available for the Club and members’ carts, powered buggies, as well as other buggies and golf club storage, a major redevelopment of the Club’s buggy storage is currently in a concept stage of development. Funding from existing resources is expected to cover the overall costs and enable this major project to be undertaken without resorting to any third-party borrowings or capital expenditure levies.
This is a hallmark of the sound fiscal management within the Wanneroo Golf Club. These future projects are indicative that the Club continues to be forward thinking in relation to the ongoing improvement of the facilities and maintenance of the course for members. The key objective is to enhance members’ enjoyment in line with the ideas and ethos of the original Founding Members.
There is no doubt that the story about the realisation of a vision of a small number of social club golfers is fascinating, captivating and rewarding, not only for those who have been privileged to experience many years involved in this journey, but also for subsequent members who have become aware of and intrigued by the unique foundation of the Club during those early formative years.
Building on the very solid foundation, the Club over the years, through its members, staff, volunteers and administrators, has continued to demonstrate a dedication that is matchless. As members, we honour, appreciate and pay tribute to these contributors from the beginning to the present time.
The future of the Wanneroo Golf Club is bright, optimistic and full of enthusiasm. The Club is confident that its future direction, supported by a new cohort of younger members, keen to get involved and contribute, will see the development and success continue. From the beginning there has been the sense of belonging to a Club that was established by its Founding Members and consequently has its members’ values and interests as its prime priority. Ensuring that members continue to matter is paramount in this wonderful journey going forward successfully for many, many years to come.
